Jason Shah: Why I'm Excited about The Gov Lab →
Jason has written a really interesting post about what happened two weeks ago at the 1st GovLab Experiment. I have some personal blogging to do myself, but I’m a co-founder of GovLab and co-creator of The Experiment.
jasonshah:
Earlier this month, I attended The Gov Lab Experiment. Led by Beth Noveck, Manik Suri, Aaron Cohen and an army of changemakers in New York, The Governance Lab at...

NYU's Spatial Relations Problems
For the past two weeks, I’ve been sitting at Fair Folks and A Goat a member based coffee house on Houston. The furniture is modestly comfortable, the coffee is unlimited and excellent, and the bandwidth works reasonably well.
The space is very beautiful and everything in it is for sale. It can be quiet, loud, warm, and chilly, but all of it is better than NYU offices.
Right now,...

Hackers Try to Fix American Government
Tuesday in Washington DC I discovered a federal government in transformation. After an Orwellian walk through the 12 foot wide hallway with the obligatory dimly lit fluorescent hallways, we turned the corner to find a digital agency’s workspace. Rolling tables could be configured for meetings of 2 to 50. Matching white boards of different shapes encircled us. Nearby, an overflowing toy box of...
BraceLand: Silicon Valley's Problem →
cbracy:
I posted something on Twitter the other day that got a bunch of attention, and I realized I wanted to clarify what I meant. Here’s what I wrote: “Silicon Valley’s problem in a nutshell: crazed about Instagram’s ToS, not a peep about FISA reauthorization.” I meant to capture something…

Life advice from Eric Hippeau and Paul Berry
On October 10th, I interviewed Lerer Ventures Partner Eric Hippeau for our series at NYU Inside the Internet Garage. We’ll post the edited video this coming week. Eric was asked a question by a student about how to manage one’s career and life and I wanted to share his answer with you. I can only paraphrase what he said. ”If you are unhappy somewhere you should leave that place....

Remains a great intellectual hero of mine. Here he is rounding into form.
Larry Lessig: I’m a little hesitant to speak because there’s a lot of teachers of mine in this room, on the Internet and of other subjects, like economics. But the teacher of this for me is Jim Cooper, who has been in Congress, he is one of the youngest members elected in the history of Congress and as old as he is...

Summary: do networks, Tumblr, Twitter, Craigslist have to maintain minimum economics to create long term sustainability:
Fred Wilson: Brett, I want to talking about the economics of networks and one of the things I have observed over the years and I don’t know if it’s correct or not but I want to throw out just to discuss a little bit regarding economics is that the sustainable...
John Perry Barlow @ Hacking Society
I think this next quote really has significant implications for understanding Internet History. I think what Barlow is saying that Facebook and Google are more democratic because of how much their employees are living with the services themselves.

Hacker Society John Perry Barlow
John Perry Barlow: Let me say something quickly, and then I’ll shut up. Well, for awhile. Years ago, I was addressing a bunch of bank CEO’s, major bankers, several members of the Federal Reserve Board, and I asked them if they had a minute to decide whether they would give up all of their assets, public and private, I mean, corporate and personal, and all of their relationships, which...

Classic mismanagement story →
One three-hour meeting in March stands out to several staffers as the moment they realized GOOD’s days as a traditional publication were probably numbered. That’s when the owners presented their most thorough refinement of their ideas. At the end of the presentation they showed a slide with an org chart, and Greenwell wasn’t on it. “I burst out laughing and said, ‘Max, I’m not on there,’ ”...

Congrats to Buddy Media from a Distant Observer
5 years ago a close banker friend of mine introduced me to an energetic second time entrepreneur named Mike Lazerow. Mike had started a golf internet business and sold it to Time Inc, but was embarking on a new ambitious idea to become the online currency of Facebook. As I recall the early vision for Buddy Media, they would be a version of what Paypal was to Ebay. I think there was something...

David Karp, the founder of Tumblr, dropped by NYU to chat with the students of Rise of Interent Media on Tuesday Night. He and his new editor-in-chief Christopher Mohney spoke for 75 minutes about their backgrounds and the past/present/future of the 95-person startup.
David’s visit catalyzed this essay — an attempt to define the epochs of digital social media.

Simmons on the Knicks so good
19. Carmelo Anthony Dear New York Knicks fans,
I know you’re a little testy right now because Linsanity was so much fun, and now it’s not as much fun. I know it’s easy to redirect your anger and angst at someone whose name rhymes with “Bardello.” Just remember …

This morning, I woke up and read Nick Bilton’s weekly New York Times’ column. Nick is a friend and one of the best bloggers/writers/journalists out there. But with today’s column, he was way off base.
Having already said what I wanted to say about the Path situation, I debated if I should weigh in again. Then I read Nick’s column again. There’s a way to say what he wants to say,...

Mike and the Mad Dog Afficonadoes Rejoice
From Bill Simmons’ weekend mailbag:
Q: I was watching a shortened Mike Francesa show on YES today. Giants fans only wanted to talk about the blown call on Greg Jennings’ fumble. Mike went on to use the phrase “under the hood” a ridiculous amount of times over the next hour to describe the action of the ref looking at the replay. I finished watching the show but it was...

I’m getting ready to launch my Kickstarter campaign for the Aaron Cohens. This morning, I realized I spend very little time sharing what has influenced me during the writing and production process. So here are a handful of creative products that are influencing me.

If I showed this line to Colts fans six weeks ago and said, “This will be the line for your Week 2 game against the Browns,” they would have asked things like, “Are the Browns about to trade a 2012 third-round pick for Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson?” and “Did our entire team get malaria?” Speaking of catastrophes, I’m launching a new...

You saw what happened in the Cowboys-Jets game on Sunday night. For the sake of Cowboys fans with heart problems, we don’t need to rehash it. What is worth noting, though, is the specific height from which the Cowboys fell. To measure that, we can use the win probability charts created by Brian Burke at his Advanced NFL Stats site. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the...

Meet the Next 63 Y Combinator Start-ups - Liz... →
When you read the list of startups coming through Ycombinator it is absolutely amazing to me that none of them appear to focus on reinventing the not really disrupted film business.
What conclusions can we draw?
1. Ycombinator doesn’t like movie/tv related startups?
2. Today’s brilliant young engineers don’t care about the movie business?
3. I’m a contrarian.
